Control Assurance Lab

A practice-heavy programme for people who own control testing cycles and need their financial controls testing app workpapers to withstand review.

What you will be able to do

  • Scope a control population and record completeness checks that a second reviewer can follow.
  • Design attribute tests aligned to the control’s frequency and the assertion it supports.
  • Operate a financial controls testing app to store samples, evidence links, and exception status without duplicate logs.
  • Write findings that separate fact, judgment, and recommended action.

Modules

1 · Control inventory literacy

Reading RCM rows, spotting vague control language, and deciding when a “key” label actually changes test intensity.

2 · Population and completeness

Reconciling source reports, handling mid-period system cuts, and documenting what was excluded—and why.

3 · Attribute design

Turning a control description into observable attributes, pass/fail rules, and tolerable exception thresholds.

4 · App workflow drills

Hands-on practice inside a financial controls testing app: sample draws, evidence attachment norms, and status transitions.

5 · Exceptions and remediation trails

Classifying issues, capturing owner responses, and knowing when retesting is warranted versus when monitoring is enough.

6 · Manager review pack

Assembling a concise pack: summary conclusions, open items, and appendix structure that external auditors recognise.

Learner notes

“Module 4’s app drills matched how our tool stores samples. I finally stopped keeping a parallel spreadsheet.”

4★ — “Solid on attribute design. I wanted more time on ITGC bridges, which sit outside this syllabus.”

FAQ

Do I need access to a specific financial controls testing app?

We provide a sandbox environment for drills. If your employer uses a different platform, the concepts transfer; screen layouts will differ.

Is this suitable for first-year auditors?

Yes, if you already understand basic financial statement assertions. Absolute beginners may prefer Sample Design Studio first.

What is a real limitation of this course?

We do not cover full IT general controls testing or ERP configuration reviews. Those require separate technical depth we intentionally leave out so the lab stays focused on process control testing.

How much live time is involved?

Expect six live sessions of 90 minutes plus asynchronous exercises. Most learners report 35–45 hours total including homework.
